INFORMATION ABOUT KOS
The island of Kos is part of the Dodecanese complex, very close to Rhodes and the coasts of Turkey. In the ancient times, it was known for its Asclepieion, a kind of medical centre dedicated to Asclepius, the god of medicine. This is where the great physician Hippocrates, who is today known as the father of medicine, used to work.
The island reached its peak in the Venetian Times, when it became an important commercial centre. The Venetians also built many impressive castles on the island, to protect it from enemies and pirates. Kos followed the historical course of the rest of Dodecanese and, after a long conquest from the Turks and the Italians, it was integrated to the Greek State in 1948.
Kos today is much developed in terms of tourism. In fact, it is one of the most popular Greek islands and has developed high quality tourist amenities. Kardamena, Kefalos, Mastichari, Tigaki, Psalidi and Paradise are only some of the beach resorts of Kos, which are well-organized and have clean water. Beach parties take frequently part there and most of them last all night long.
Apart from popular beaches, Kos also has many sights to visit. The strong Nerantzia Castle right in the port of Kos Town was originally built by the Byzantines and was later fortified by the Venetians. The Hippocrates Plane Tree in the centre of Kos Town is 500 years old and is said to be a descendant of the ancient tree under which Hippocrates would teach medical practices to his disciplines. The archaeological site of Asclepieion and the Ancient Agora are also quite popular and well-preserved.
Surrounded by wonderful beaches, Kos is the island of contrasts: it can be very popular or very isolate. There are busy beaches, like Kardamena and Kefalos, but you can also discover beaches to be totally on your own.
